Champagne Château de Boursault
2014 Millésime

2014 Millésime

Vintages in the Champagne region of France is more important than in most other regions. At those northern limits of grape growing it is important to mind the varied conditions of each and every vintage. To balance the lean years with the perfectly ripe, most Champagne is a blend of multiple vintages -- increasingly we hear this art described as multi vintage. Vintage Champagne is a rarity. Only 10% of the total annual production of the Champagne Region becomes vintage. On average the producers declare about three vintages in every decade. Alex Fringhian declared and presents, Champagne Château de Boursault Brut Millésime 2014.

Crème de la crème

Château de Boursault VINTAGE 2014, with the grace of God, will be available early 2020. But, as with all vintage years, it will be in very high demand and very limited.

The Significance

"Alex Fringhian, Directeur Général Champagne Château de Boursault hasn't produced or offered a Millésime in over a decade." -- Paul Davis, CMO Creative Artisan Brands
Description du Millésime 2014 Champagne

2014 was a very technical and delicate year in Champagne. As everywhere in France, the summer of 2014 was cold and humid. And as in Alsace, Champagne fell victim to fruit flies (especially for red grapes). The turnaround of August 15 and the Indian summer saved the vintage. Meunier and pinot noir struggled to reach sufficient maturity levels. Worse, winemakers had to choose between returning overly acidic grapes or taking the risk of waiting and losing everything. The maturity rising very quickly in September, never or almost, the harvest took place so quickly (less than two weeks) for the winemakers or the houses that could afford it. Thus, houses with the resources to mobilize their teams of harvesters at the right time have managed to work miracles.

On the other hand, the vintage is very homogeneous. Chardonnay has matured perfectly and has produced a bountiful harvest especially in the great raw villages of Avize, Mesnil or Cramant.

CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE

Château de Boursault

The Château

In the small wine village of Boursault, the château sits proudly overlooking the left bank of the Marne valley, 10km west of Epernay, the capital of Champagne.

Built on the ruins of a fortified castle that belonged to the Barons de Boursault, the Château de Boursault is in the Neo-Renaissance style and looks like the Château de Chambord.

In 1843, Madame Clicquot entrusted the construction of the Château de Boursault to the architect Arveuf, as a generous gift to her daughter, wife of Louis de Chevigne, and to her granddaughter, Marie-Clementine, who received it as a dowry when she married Louis de Rochechouart-Mortemart.

The Vineyard

Château de Boursault Champagne is one of only two Champagnes that can boast the phrase Mise en Bouteille au château (château bottled); it is an incredibly rare property where all its vineyards are contained within one stone wall. This clos (wall) also contains the château with its deep cellars, along with the office building and the chai where the actual production is done by hand. It is a truly unique property where the family takes on the full concept of managing their terroir with a strong ecological awareness which has earned Château de Boursault Champagne two major awards for Sustainable Viticulture and High Environmental Value.

In the photo, the worker in the vineyard is Alex Fringhian who demonstrates the hands-on approach it takes to be the Directeur Général and guardian of such a treasure.

Champagne Rosé de Saignée Chateau Boursault – Bronze Medal category ‘First Date’ 2017: “I am most impressed with this rosé de saignée, in my many years of Champagne tasting I can say that this is a very fine example of this style of Champagne. I would suggest that it has performed well since remaining in the bottle and would be worthy of much more than a bronze medal for what it received back in 2017, it could now easily be a gold.”
